National Director of Wellness Brand Management Team Sodexo School Services, North America

School administrators know all too well the nutritional challenges many students face in and out of the classroom, whether it’s students rushing off to busy afterschool activities or those returning home to care for siblings. In many cases, students are waiting on family members to arrive after a long day of work. Why is this significant after the school day ends? Ensuring students have access to that evening meal can make a difference in their academic achievement. For example, an evening meal can give students the energy to complete their homework or have a better night’s rest to prepare for the next day of learning. (more…)

Ending Summer Hunger: A Team Effort

A staggering 15.3 million American children live in food insecure households.  Right here in our own country, maybe even in your own neighborhood, there are children who have become used to living with the sounds of a growling stomach.  These are kids who aren’t lucky enough to be picky eaters; who don’t have the luxury of asking “What’s for dinner tonight?” but instead, ask “Are we having dinner tonight?”  (more…)

It’s Summertime and Children are Hungry

While most kids can look forward to a carefree summer of sun and fun, for too many children the end of the school year means they are hungry. During the academic year, 22 million kids receive free and reduced-priced breakfasts and lunches through their schools, relying on them as their primary source of nutrition.

It’s a shocking reality that, in the wealthiest country in the world, for many kids, their school is the most dependable source of food that they have throughout the week. During weekends, holidays and the summer when schools are closed, that reliable source of nutrition is no longer available. It becomes harder for parents to make ends meet during the summer months, when grocery expenses alone can increase by more $300 per month. And when school lets out for the summer, only 3.8 million kids participate in summer meal programs. That means 86% of those eligible may not have regular access to nutritious meals during the summer months. By any measure, this is unacceptable.

“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.”

One in five children is at risk of hunger in the United States—that’s 16 million children going to bed and waking up without regular access to food. Children concerned about where to find their next meal are not capable of focusing or performing well in school. While the numbers are staggering, the real issue is the impact food insecurity has on our nation’s youth. Proper nutrition is critical to a child’s development. Not having enough of the right kinds of food can have serious implications for a child’s physical and mental health, academic achievement and future economic prosperity.
