Energy Management for Earth Day Year-Round

President & CEO of Asbury Communities, Inc.

As we celebrate Earth Day this year, I feel proud that Asbury Communities can point to our contribution in helping preserve the planet’s resources.

Much of that is thanks to our partnership with Sodexo, which like us, honors stewardship of our resources not only as a business practice but as a value.

In 2013, through our partnership with Sodexo, we entered into an energy management program to lock in our energy expenditures for five years and to give more control of our energy expenditures to residents and associates. We have had great success. In just over five years we have reduced our electricity use by 14 percent, our carbon emissions by 12 percent, and our natural gas use by 8 percent. And, we’ve saved 8 million gallons of water.

As we continued to explore additional opportunities based on our success with the energy management contract, Asbury residents and associates began looking for more opportunities to reduce energy at all our communities. Through energy audits, changing exterior and interior lighting, adding motion-sensor lighting, replacing old equipment with more energy-efficient replacements, and other strategies, the savings continued to grow.

Asbury residents had long been spearheading their own environmental initiatives – growing oysters to help filter the Chesapeake Bay, creating a 17-acre nature preserve, reducing the use of Styrofoam and winning awards for recycling.

They appreciated knowing our organization shared their desire to help the earth.

With a close-to-100-year legacy, Asbury understands the importance of preserving the earth for future generations. We appreciate knowing that Sodexo brings additional resources to our associates and communities to focus on this critical goal.
