Early this year McKinsey and LeanIn.org  released their  Women in the Workplace report, which found that women remain underrepresented across organizations—especially at senior levels of leadership. According to the report, women “experience an uneven playing field, with their odds of advancement lower at every level; there is a persistent leadership gap in the most senior roles; gender diversity is not widely believed to be a priority; and while employee programs designed to help balance work and family are abundant, participation is low among both sexes due to concerns that using them will negatively affect their careers.” (more…)

Can you name the world’s largest emerging market? Most would say China or India or maybe even Brazil.  But Sylvia Ann Hewlett, CEO of the Center for Talent Innovation, argues that women are in fact the largest emerging market.  While this might seem like a novel idea, companies should be paying close attention to the economic power women wield.  According to Financial Planning women control the majority of personal wealth in the United States, own businesses that contribute $3 trillion annually to the economy, and are due to inherit 70% of the $41 trillion in intergenerational wealth transfers in the next 40 years.

Today, only 26 women lead Fortune 500 companies and just 17 percent of all board members are women. Compound this with the fact that a mere 28 percent of those firms have only one female director. And there has been minimal improvement in the gender wage gap, with men still earning 22 percent more than women in equivalent positions.

As a Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) member, Sodexo is proud to support and grow local businesses around the world. I was proud to be at the 2014 CGI Annual Meeting this week, where Sodexo announced our commitment to purchase more than $1 billion of products and services from almost 5,000 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in 40 countries by 2017. We project this initiative will support 5,000 businesses, and more than 1,500 of which will be owned and operated by women, and impact more than one million people!
