When reading about business trends, we tend to think about them in terms of the distant future. However, with studies showing that only 30 percent of Americans are engaged at work and billions of dollars are lost in productivity as a result, it would appear that businesses need to start looking for possible solutions now. That’s why our 2014 Workplace Trends Report is a timely, valuable tool for companies to examine ways to create a work experience where employees are energized, engaged and productive.
At Sodexo, we believe it’s vitally crucial to identify what’s next in the evolution of the workplace. We believe this for a number of reasons. Chief among them is the direct correlation between how we work and the quality of our lives. Most of us spend more of our waking lives at our places of employment with coworkers than at home with our families. Yet, research indicates millions of Americans who work full-time are either dissatisfied or, at best, merely apathetic and uninspired with their employment.
In the 2014 Workplace Trends Report, our research team identified trends that will have significant impact on reversing some of that discontent and disengagement—trends which use health, wellness, technology, facilities, environment, diversity, rewards and recognition, and even gaming to improve an employee’s quality of life in the workplace. Sodexo’s global workforce of 480,000 employees touches the lives of 75 million end-users daily, from students in the classroom to nurses in the ER to executives in the boardroom. It is that breadth of end-users and environments which gives us access and first-hand knowledge of how to impact the quality of life of those we serve.
As these workplace trends take hold, more and more businesses will look to partner with companies that understand the value associated with this quality of life as a tool that bolsters their strategies by focusing on the simplest, and at times, most invisible tasks. In practical terms, quality of life provides people with reasons to feel better and more respected; it accelerates their progress, and by extension, the performance of their organization.
